Content Freshness
How recently a page was published or updated — a signal search and AI engines weigh more heavily for time-sensitive queries when choosing what to cite.

Content freshness is the recency signal engines use to prefer up-to-date sources, especially for queries where the answer changes over time (pricing, statistics, "best X in 2026", evolving standards). A stale page on a fast-moving topic loses citations to a fresher competitor.
Does freshness affect AI citations?
Yes for time-sensitive topics. AI engines favor recent, accurate sources when a query implies currency — and they lean on fast-indexed content via Bing/IndexNow. For evergreen definitional queries, topical authority matters more than recency.
Which content needs regular updates?
Anything with dates, prices, version numbers, or "current best" framing. Refresh the facts, update the modified date honestly, and re-ping indexing — don't fake freshness by changing a timestamp without changing content.
How do you signal freshness honestly?
Update the visible content and the dateModified in your Article schema together, then resubmit via sitemap or IndexNow. Truthful freshness compounds; cosmetic date-bumping gets discounted.
