Topical Authority
The depth and breadth of a domain's coverage of a subject area — a key signal AI engines use to decide which sources to cite.
Topical authority is the cumulative evidence that a domain knows a subject thoroughly. It comes from publishing comprehensive content across the topic's surface area, earning backlinks from other authoritative pages in the same space, and being referenced by name in third-party content.
How is topical authority different from domain authority?
Domain authority is general (how strong is the whole site?); topical authority is specific (how strong is this domain on this topic?). A small site can have high topical authority on a niche subject while having low overall domain authority.
How do you build topical authority?
Pick a focused topic. Publish a pillar piece. Build 6-12 supporting articles that fan out from the pillar. Internal-link them. Earn external mentions and backlinks. Repeat for adjacent topics over time.
